A Thousand Clowns
Nick, twelve, lives with his Uncle Murray, a Dickensian figure akin to Mr. Micawber who is perpetually hopeful that nothing will turn up. What emerges is a social worker who develops feelings for Murray and, to a lesser extent, Nick. As child welfare officials attempt to coerce Murray into being a conventional man (as a condition of allowing him to keep Nick), the nephew, who has previously lauded his Uncle's iconoclastic attitude to life, attempts to act as a mediator. However, when he succeeds, he is concerned by the uncle's willingness to bend to society's will in order to save the relationship.
