Everything Is Copy

Jacob Bernstein's eminently delightful film is a tribute to his mother Nora Ephron: the Hollywood-raised daughter of screenwriters who grew up to be an outstanding reporter turned piercingly witty essayist who eventually became a novelist/screenwriter/playwright/director. Onscreen, Ephron comes to life through her words; the recollections of her sisters, colleagues, past spouses, and numerous friends; sequences from her films; and, most importantly, her unique presence. Consider any given moment in which Ephron demonstrates her brilliant yet acerbic wit (for example, this retort to a scolding talk show host— "Do you have a soft spot for Julie Nixon? I, on the other hand, do not ") and it's difficult to imagine she's been gone for three years from our midst. Everything Is Copy (Ephron's mother's credo) is a lovingly rendered but candid portrayal that also serves as a vivid image of an earlier, livelier, bitchier, and funnier era in New York culture.
