Perfumed Nightmare

Tahimik describes the daily patterns of life in the community through voiceover narration. He is enthralled with Voice of America broadcasts, particularly those pertaining to the space program. He yearns to be a member of the developed world and establishes the Werner von Braun fan club. When an American arrives in the aftermath of an aborted international conference, he is given his chance. The American invites him to Paris, where he will operate his gumball machine concession on the streets. He makes acquaintances in Paris and on a trip to Germany and learns that progress in the developed world comes at the expense of fundamental principles. With images of a Paris summit meeting playing in the background, and unable to return to an idealized version of his past, he firmly refuses to submit to progress' demands, resigning as head of the Werner von Braun fan club and declaring that he will find his own way.
