During the campaign for re election, the politician Paul Madvig decides to tidy up his past, linking into the commendable politician Ralph Henry and refusing the aid of their gangster Nick Varna. Paul arm,'' Ed Beaumont, finds his own body on the street when Ralph's son of Paul's sister Opal, is killed. Nick uses the financial case of The Observer to induce the newspaper to boost the feeling that Paul Madvig may have killed Taylor to be used by the writer Clyde Matthews.
