The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum

In late nineteenth-century Tokyo, Kikunosuke Onoue, the adopted son of a famed actor and himself a female role specialist, realizes that he is only appreciated for his playing because he is his father's heir. Devastated by this, he seeks comfort from Otoku, a household servant, and the two develop feelings for one another. Kikunosuke gets resolved to leave home and establish himself as an actor on his own terms, and Otoku follows him faithfully.
