The Donna Reed Show

Starring Donna Reed as Donna Stone, a middle-class housewife in upper-middle America, The Donna Reed Show is a classic American situation comedy. Co-starring with her are Carl Betz, a pediatrician, and Shelley Fabares and Paul Petersen, their adolescent children Mary and Jeff. This show debuted on ABC on September24,1958, and ran through March19, 1966. Patty Petersen, Petersen's younger sister, replaced Fabares as Trisha, Petersen's adoptive daughter, when Fabares departed the show in 1963. On January31,1963, in the episode titled "A Way of Her Own," Patty Petersen made her debut. Darryl Richard became a near regular as Smitty, Jeff's best friend, while Bob Crane and Ann McCrea guest starred as the Stones' friends the Kelseys in the last seasons. Celebrity guests on the show included Esther Williams (in character as a famous dress designer), Don Drysdale (in character as himself) and Willie Mays (in character as themselves), teen heartthrob James Darren (in character as a pop singer with the measles), canine superstar Lassie (in character as herself), and young Jay North (in character as himself from CBS's Dennis the Menace). William S. Roberts devised the series, and Reed and her then-husband, producer Tony Owen, worked on it. Family issues of the era were explored in each episode, such as dealing with a clumsy cleaner, celebrating a coworker's retirement, and making time for a date night without the kids. There was some discussion of controversial topics including women's rights and press freedom.
