Black Is … Black Ain’t
Marlon Riggs, an African-American documentary filmmaker who passed away in 1994 from complications connected to AIDS, was working on his final project at the time. In numerous moments, he addresses the camera from his hospital bed. In the movie, misogynistic and anti-gay insults from popular hip-hop songs are intercut with interviews of African-American intellectuals and political theorists including Cornel West, Bell Hooks, and Angela Davis to discuss sexism and homophobia in the black community.
