American Friends

Francis Ashby, a senior Oxford don who is on vacation alone in the Alps, meets Caroline, an American on vacation with her friend Elinor, an Irish-American girl she adopted many years ago who is now coming into her own. Ashby likes being with them, especially Elinor, and both women are attracted to him. Even so, he is surprised when they show up at Oxford without telling him. Women aren't even allowed on the grounds of the College, let alone in the rooms. In fact, the good Fellows look down on any relationship, no matter how innocent it is.
