It Was a Faint Dream

The action takes place in Kyoto in the 13th century, where the Imperial court is under the sway of the clergy. Shijo was a poor girl who was sold into the service of a powerful daima to be his concubine. She becomes dissatisfied with her life in isolation and begins an affair with a State Councillor who also happens to be the brother of a retired Emperor. After realizing that she is nothing more than a pawn in the court's game, she decides to become a nun and travel the country.
