Le Samouraï
Alain Delon gives a performance that is considered to be the defining moment of his career as he takes on the role of Jef Costello, a contract killer with samurai instincts. After successfully carrying out a hit that had been meticulously planned, Jef finds himself caught between a dogged police investigator and a merciless employer. Not even his armor of a fedora and trench coat can shield him from this situation. Le Samourai is a razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture, with a healthy dose of Japanese lone-warrior mythology thrown in for good measure. It was directed by the maverick director Jean-Pierre Melville, who gave it an elegantly stylized masterpiece of cool.
