The tale adheres to a trio of Japanese youths of Chinese descent who leave their semi-rural childhood and relocate to Shinjuku, Tokyo, where they befriend a troubled Shanghai woman of the street as well as drop foul of a neighborhood crime syndicate. Like a lot of Miike's works, the movie examines the underbelly of reputable Japanese society and the issues of adaptation encountered by non-ethnically Japanese people in Japan.
