Safety to Nome

Every February, four dozen athletes are flown to Alaska to embark on a trip that will test their bodies and brains, as well as their determination to succeed and their will to live. Competitors must travel 1000 miles through the Alaskan tundra on bicycles, on foot, or by skis to complete the Iditarod Trail Invitational, which is the world's most difficult and remote ultra marathon. More individuals have climbed Everest in an afternoon than have cycled from Anchorage to Nome. This year, however, twenty-six racers will attempt to complete the entire 1000-mile Iditarod Trail. A 12-day record has been set for the quickest time ever. The longest one is more than 30 minutes. Those that compete here year after year in quest of a sense of purpose and thrill do so because of the unknowns, yet it is precisely those same unknowns that make this race one of the most perilous on the planet. In what ways are you willing to sacrifice your toes, or your hands, or even someone you care about? That's what happens when you don't prepare for the Iditarod Trail.
