That Summer
GREY GARDENS, by Albert and David Maysles, immortalized the estate of Edith and Little Edie Beale, relatives of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy who lived in appalling conditions. However, there is more to the story: Lee Radziwill and Peter Beard introduced the Maysles to the Beales when the two set out to shoot a documentary on Radziwill's youth. Reels from that first meeting were put away for 45 years. This documentary resurrects the footage that has been lost. We are transported to "that summer" in 1972 through Beard's recollections and artistic vision, a seductive dream world and collage of radically unconventional creative personalities—Warhol, Bacon, Jagger, and Capote—practicing the art of living amidst oppressive forces of class expectation and prejudice.
