The Living Desert

The Living Desert was the initial feature film in Disney's True-Life Adventures series of docudramas concentrating on zoological research studies; the previous movies in the series, consisting of the Academy Award-winning Seal Island, were short subjects. The docudrama was shot at the Westward Look Wyndham Grand Hotel as well as Spa in Tucson, Arizona. Most of the wild animals displayed in the film was given away to what would quickly come to be the Arizona-Sonora Desert Gallery. The movie was inspired by 10 mins of footage shot by N. Paul Kenworthy Jr., a doctoral pupil at the University of The Golden State at Los Angeles. Kenworthy's footage of a fight between an arachnid and a wasp interested Disney, that moneyed a feature-length production following the lives of varied desert types. Disney was extremely supportive of Kenworthy's job and its effect on nonfiction filmmaking, specifying, "This is where we can tell an actual, sustained tale for the very first time in these nature images."
