Blue's Clues

Blue's Clues is an American children's TV show that debuted on September 8, 1996, on the cable TV network Nickelodeon and ran for ten years, until August 6, 2006. Producers Angela Santomero, Todd Kessler, and Traci Paige Johnson combined ideas from child development and early childhood education with new animation and production techniques that helped their viewers learn. It was first hosted by Steve Burns, who left in 2002 to pursue a music career, and then by Donovan Patton. Burns was a big part of the show's success, and rumors about his departure showed that it had become a cultural phenomenon. Blue's Clues was a big part of Nickelodeon's growth because it became the highest-rated show for preschoolers on American commercial television. It has been called "one of the most successful, critically acclaimed, and ground-breaking preschool TV series of all time." A spin-off called Blue's Room started airing in 2004. The show's producers and creators used a story format instead of the more common magazine format. They also used repetition to reinforce the lessons and set up every episode the same way. In the 30 years since Sesame Street started in the U.S., researchers have studied how children grow and what they like to watch on TV. They changed the genre by getting their viewers involved. Research was a part of making decisions and coming up with ideas for the show, and it was used in all parts and stages of the creative process. Blue's Clues was the first cutout animation series for preschoolers. It looked like a storybook because it used primary colors and had simple construction paper shapes of familiar objects with different colors and textures. It was set in a home, which was familiar to American kids, but it didn't look like other children's TV shows. Starting in 1999, a live production of Blue's Clues that used many of the innovations that the show's creators came up with toured the U.S. As of 2002, over 2 million people had seen over 1,000 performances.
