Fireball XL5
Fireball XL5 is a science fiction-themed children's television show that follows the missions of the World Space Patrol's spaceship Fireball XL5. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, husband and wife team, produced the show for ITC Entertainment in 1962 through their company APF in collaboration with ATV. Anderson thought a brand of motor oil—Castrol XL—had an interesting sound while developing his new show. The name "Fireball XL" was created through a phonetic change, with the "-5" added because the title seemed a little flat without the numeral. The Andersons' Supermarionation was featured in the show, a form of puppetry first introduced in Four Feather Falls and Supercar and later used in their subsequent productions such as Stingray and Captain Scarlet. Fireball XL5 was produced on 35mm film in 39 black and white half-hour episodes; all future Anderson series were produced in color. Several Anderson series have aired in syndication in the United States, but Fireball XL5 is the only one to have aired on a US network. From 1963 to September 1965, NBC aired the series during its Saturday morning children's block. Due to a number of similarities and settings, Space Patrol, produced by Gerry Anderson's ex-business partner and co-founder of AP Films, Arthur Provis, is frequently confused with Fireball XL5.
